Habakkuk 1

Sep 15, 2024    Mitch Green

In today’s message, we dive into the opening of our new series in Habakkuk, building on the themes from Jonah. While Jonah is a familiar story of a prophet running from God, Habakkuk presents a different challenge—wrestling with God’s plans in the midst of uncertainty. If you’ve ever wondered what God is up to, especially after seasons of frustration or confusion, this series is for you.

Habakkuk lived during Judah’s final years, surrounded by injustice, idolatry, and the threat of Babylon. His story is a lament—a heartfelt cry to God with raw questions. Throughout the book, we’ll explore five major woes (unjust economics, slavery, ignorance, idolatry) and how God responds to Habakkuk’s complaints.

Big Idea for today:

The finite cry. The Infinite replies. The Faithful wait.

We’ll look at Habakkuk’s first complaint and God’s response, unpacking what it means to cry out to God, feel unheard, and yet trust that He sees, hears, and acts. The question isn’t just whether God hears our prayers—it’s whether we are willing to wait on Him even when His answers don’t match our expectations.

Prayer Prompt:

God, I will wait for You (be specific).

Lord, grow my faith in the waiting.

Keep my eyes on You, no matter the circumstances.

Join us as we explore what it means to faithfully wait on the Lord. Let’s learn to trust Him even when life feels uncertain.
